How do I get started?
Our program has a registration period beginning in the spring for the upcoming fall/winter season. Information on how to register is posted in our Registration section. You may also choose to register in person at the Northwoods Ice Center, and dates will be posted on our website.

Where are games/practices held?
For all levels, the majority of practices will be held at the Northwoods Ice Center.  Teams typically travel to other cities in Texas approximately one or two weekends a month.

My child has never ice-skated before. How can he/she play ice hockey?
For beginners, there are plenty of options to learn to play hockey, and classes are available to suit different levels of ability based on experience. Please contact the Northwoods Ice Center or a Board Member for information about upcoming sessions.

What does it cost to play?
Fees are set at the beginning of registration based on estimates for: ice usage, number of players, costs for jerseys and socks, costs for referees, and some other small incidental costs. The SAYHA is a nonprofit organization.

Ice hockey is not an inexpensive sport, but payment plans are available.  Check the registration page for current fees.

How long does the season run, and how often will my child play?
Tryouts typically start in July or August, team practices in September, with league games beginning as early as October. All levels are playing by the 2nd week of November, with the typical season ending in early to mid-March.

How many times a week will my child play?
Players usually practice 2-3 times a week.  Teams playing in the Dallas Stars Travel Hockey League may play 3-4 games in a weekend, traveling once or twice a month.  Travel depends on the league schedule.

Hockey is a physical game, but unlike the sterotypical images where there are more fists flying than pucks, youth hockey is NOT a violent sport.  Players are covered from head to toe in protective gear and good sportsmanship is promoted at all times.  Many families involved in youth hockey report that their player is more likely to get hurt on the baseball field or basketball court where protective gear is not part of the uniform.

What are Tryout Clinics, and are they mandatory?
Tryout clinics are a way for the kids to work on the skills, to show coaches the level of ability, and to have a good time on the ice with their hockey buddies.  Players who do not attend try-outs may be offered a slot on a team based on availability.

What kind of equipment is needed?
Under USA Hockey rules, players are required to wear an approved helmet with mask, shoulder pads, mouthguard, neckguard, gloves, shinguards, athletic cup, elbow pads, skates, and stick.

How do I obtain equipment?
Equipment can be purchased at the Northwoods Rink or bought new or used online.  San Antonio Youth Hockey league also maintains a hockey storage unit of used equipment in good condition.  Contact a Board member to request gear.
