The San Antonio Jr. Rampage Squirt team started the new year on a an upbeat note as they defeated the Grapevine Ice Jets 5-4 in the Championship Game of the Dallas Star Winter Classic Hockey Tournament. After winning their first two games by scores of 2-1 (vs. Mc Kinney Lightning) and 8-1 (vs. Wichita Warriors) the SA boys fell 3-6 against the Grapevine Ice Jets in a late game on Sunday evening. Determined to not let their chance at bringing home Medals, Trophy and Banner, our boys played their hearts out in a close finals game in which they were never behind but during the course of which they saw their 3 goal lead evaporate into a 4-4 tie in the middle of the 3rd period. Matthew Anguiano secured the victory with a nifty backhander from a tight angle to the far side of the net from the right circle, with under 3 minutes remaining. Team newcomer Brodie Ingersoll recorded two goals in the tournament and Evan Granier had his first marker of the season. Everest Schneider provided critical leadership both on and off the ice scoring both goals in the first game (including the game winner) and adding scoring punch throughout the tournament. Next week-end, in their last home-stand of the season, the SA squad will face the Dallas Penguins, the Grapevine Ice Jets (again) and the Houston Hit Men. With the season winding down and only six games remaining, each game promises to bring plenty of excitement as every team will be fighting for points in the standing with potential playoff implications for all rosters.
